What Is Visceral Manipulation?

Visceral Manipulation (VM) is a gentle, hands-on manual therapy developed by French osteopath and physical therapist Jean-Pierre Barral. It focuses on the internal organs, their environment, and their potential influence on many structural and physiological dysfunctions throughout the body. The term “viscera” refers to the internal organs — the liver, kidneys, and intestines, for example.

The approach rests on the understanding that the organs are in constant motion, moving with every breath, and that this movement is transmitted through the fascia to the rest of the body. Restrictions can form in these fascial tissues from infection, injury, surgery, habitual patterns, or emotions. When an organ loses its normal mobility, the body is forced to compensate, creating fixed, abnormal points of tension that can give way to functional and structural problems throughout the body. For this reason, Visceral Manipulation does not focus solely on the site of pain or dysfunction, but evaluates the entire body to find the source of the problem — which is often far removed from where the symptom is felt.

In practice, the therapist feels for altered or decreased motion within the viscera, as well as restrictive patterns throughout the body, and then applies gentle techniques — a soft compression, mobilization, and elongation of the soft tissues. Because the visceral tissues are delicate and reactive, gentle and precisely directed force reaps the greatest results, and VM works only to assist the forces already at work in the body rather than forcing change.

The purpose of Visceral Manipulation is to re-create, harmonize, and increase proprioceptive communication in the body — enhancing its internal mechanism for better health, revitalizing the person, and relieving symptoms of pain, dysfunction, and poor posture. Through organ-specific fascial mobilization, VM aims to address musculoskeletal, vascular, nervous, urogenital, respiratory, digestive, and lymphatic dysfunction. As Barral puts it, “Only the tissues know.”
